Leading by Example and a Pointer Finger: Enriching our Lives through the Arts and Technology (high and low)

I was reminded today of the influence of people who lead by example, as I assisted Bonnie and Ricky Trione in sharing their inspirational and educational messages about dealing with adversity, perseverance, "choosing your battles", and that "everyone is an artist."

Ms. Howard's second-graders at Booth Elementary School were engaged and intrigued as "Mr. Ricky" explained how he became blind in two separate accidents, demonstrated how he paints with textured "puffy paint" and his fingers, and shared some of the strategies and "tools" he uses to accommodate for not being able to see.

With the "tool" of a finger to feel texture and finger-paint (creating beautiful images without the sense of sight), and a high-tech gadget which identifies colors, Ricky Trione demonstrated that with desire, perseverance, and support systems we can often find ways to achieve goals which may initially seem unachievable. (This is a message I never grow tired of hearing and was again reminded by example that outcomes are also dependent upon my own actions, decisions and attitude.)

As I listened today (as I have so many times before) to the information shared, I really focused for the first time on how Ricky authentically utilizes tools and technology to achieve his goals through art. I was struck by the diversity of these "tools" from the most primitive (a finger) to sophisticated (talking watch, talking computer, and color-identifier).

So I thought about how the latest and greatest technologies are very cool and can certainly serve a purpose, but no matter how sophisticated the technology, it may not always be the most useful; the process may just require paint on a paper plate and a pointer finger!

Hi again, Dr. Baggett! So many things I love about this post! First, how awesome that "Mr. Ricky" doesn't allow his disability to get in the way with his talent and passion. This alone shows a great example to kids by teaching them to not be discouraged or give up in any situation. I find it very cool that he does incorporate technology with his art, giving kids another example of how it can be used educationally. The thing I like best is he also keeps it simple by just using paint and his finger to create artwork. I needed to be reminded as well, of the simple message to choose your battles. I enjoyed reading your post; it gives you a lot to think about!

Dr. Baggett,I’m again commenting for an assignment in Dr. Strange’s EDM 310 class, and I found this post really interesting. I love the inspiration that exudes from Ricky Trione! I was fortunate enough to also see Ricky work firsthand when I was in high school. He came to our art class, and even though it was a few years ago, I still remember a lot. I don’t remember him having the technology you mentioned though. He had someone with him who told him the location of the colors on his paper plate and that’s how he chose and found the colors. I would love to see the new technology that you are talking about now. It just proves how quickly technology is changing and how we must stay on top of things in order to benefit from them. Thank you for posting this about such a talented and inspirational artist!

Hi Dr. Baggett!!! I am commenting for an assignment in EDM 310 at University of South Alabama. I really enjoyed reading this post and was inspired by M. Ricky Trione's passion for his art. I love how he does not let his disability discourage him, instead it motivates him to create art in a different way. He is also setting an example to kids to not give up be be creative using the tools of fingers, paint and the use of technology.

Hi Dr. Baggett. I am in Dr. Strange's EDM 310 class. This post is very encouraging. I enjoyed reading about how Mr. Ricky uses his talents in painting. I think this is very encouraging and rewarding to children to see how even though Mr. Ricky has a disability, he is using his disability for encouraging others and helping others to never give up on their dreams.

Hi Dr. Baggett, I am commenting for an assignment in Dr. Strange's EDM 310 class. I think it is wonderful that Mr. Ricky Trione is achieving such great things despite being blind. I think it would be easy for someone with a disability to just never try to do something that others say is impossible. He should be an inspiration for all who think they cannot do something and just give up without trying. I enjoyed reading this post!

Hi,Dr. Baggett. I am commenting for an assignment in EDM 310. As I reflect on this post, it really goes to show if one wants something bad enough, no adversity will keep one from failing. There are no excuses! There is no reason to say "I can't draw or paint." Who says we have to stay within the lines? This goes to show what the imagination and technology can do.

Hi Dr. Baggett. I am in Dr. Strange's EDM 310 class. I love this post about Mr. Ricky. When I was in high school I was lucky enough to see him paint in person which was so inspirational. I love how he does not let his disability get the best of him. He loves to paint, therefore that is what he does. I did not see him use this new technology but would be really interested too. Yes I have been out of high school for a few years now, but I am still amazed at how fast technology advances in the world.

Hi Dr. Baggett. I am an EDM310 student at the University of South Alabama, in Dr. Strange's class. This post about Mr. Ricky is so inspiring. It is amazing that despite his blindness he still continues to paint. It is great that he has such a positive attitude and never gave up what he loves to do. And the use of the technology he uses just shows how far we have come.
